Bloody Sunday: Ex-soldier arrested over Londonderry shootings
|
A former soldier has been arrested by detectives investigating the events of Bloody Sunday in Londonderry.
Thirteen people were killed when British paratroopers opened fire on a civil rights march through the city in January 1972. A fourteenth died later.
The 66-year-old is a former member of the Parachute Regiment.
It is understood he is being questioned over the deaths of William Nash, Michael McDaid and John Young.
The man is the first person to be arrested as part of the Bloody Sunday investigation.
He is being interviewed at a police station in Belfast after being detained in County Antrim on Tuesday morning.
He is soldier J, who was one of the soldiers who appeared before the Saville Inquiry.

Now I'm not going to get into the rights and wrongs of this, except to say, if you send soldiers into a situation where firearms are going to be used, then don't be surprised when firearms are used, unless orders were disobeyed.
Seems like the people that sent the Paras in, should be prosecuted or investigated, not the Grunt on the street?

Really?
Have you heard of the original UVF arming up to stop home rule from the Irish Republic. The reason the badly named Northern Ireland is part of the UK is because it was the will of the people.
Had there been Irish home rule of the 6 counties, the result would have been civil war and a higher death toll then there is currently.
I have no issue with the Easter Rising of 1916, I have no issue with an independent free Ireland, I do however take issue with the PIRA, the campaign of violence since 1969 and the murdering of innocents.
PS, Ireland was never before in the history for the island a united nation.

It would appear that my 9-year old daughter understands more about Irish history than some of our "Irish" posters.

I hope all these Johnny foreigners observed the two minute silence, sadly that is not my experience. They do realise they would not be able to enjoy the freedom of this land if it were not for those that gave their lives, it is just that they have no respect for our country, history and traditions, however they still wish to eat from our table.

I think the hint is in the name, Northern Ireland! Should be part of Ireland full stop. It Britain had of fully withdrawn from Ireland none of this would of happened and thousands of lives on both sides could of been saved. How would you feel if a quarter of England was part of another state?

You seem to have forgotten that the majority of the population of Country 2 wished to remain a part of Country 1. Of course, this is to take take no account of Country 3, who harboured the terrorists in Country 2 despite it having been none of their business for 70 years.

WHO MANIAC
1972 alone 100 soldiers were killed and 500 injured by the IRA, there were 1,300 bomb attacks.
So yeah, the threat of murder was real you fucking plank and it is very well known that Martin McGuiness was firing at British troops on bloody Sunday long before the Para's started firing

"One of the inquiry's other findings was that Mr McGuinness was present at the time of the violence and "probably armed with a sub-machine gun"
Like I said, I fucking whitewash of history to appease murdering scum

Interesting to note that none of the usual IRA-loving shit stirrers on this site know enough about the Troubles (as suspected) to make any meaningful contributions to this highly relevant thread.

Since the burden of proof will be entirely different from the Saville enquiry and since the defence will ensure the jury is packed with protestants, the inevitable (and, in my opinion correct) acquittal will only stir up trouble.
An idiotic decision.

Although I don't believe a solder (or the police) can be above the law and in ordinary circumstances should be liable to prosecution where they have transgressed. However, with all that has gone on and the past sins forgiven in the interests of peace then a line should also been drawn under this episode.

Will probably be considered a hate crime to commemorate 11/11 in our lifetime.
the way things have gone in the last 10-15 years, this isn't actually that much of a ridiculous proposition.
If you'd have said at the turn of the century that we'd be locking up marines for killing people and sending out our police to attack people attending homecoming parades you'd have been laughed at.

Various IRA factions have tried and thus far failed. Thankfully Northern Ireland is learning to live with itself.
This is a stupid fucking move by the government and could cause a lot of grief.
